Monitoring drug treatment to optimise effects and minimise dangers can be time consuming and requires meticulous attention to detail. Harm can be caused by miscalculating doses because many drugs have a narrow “window” in which therapeutic benefits can be obtained at a low risk of unwanted effects. Maintaining therapeutic drug concentrations is a complex task requiring knowledge of medicine and pharmacokinetics, a good rapport with the patients, and some skill in calculating dose.
